The West of England Laser Centre is extremely proud to operate under the watch of Mr Kim Hakin MB BS, DO, FRCS, FRCOphth, an experienced, capable and respected Consultant Ophthalmologist and cosmetic eyelid surgery specialist.
Mr Hakin personally sees and treats everyone that attends the clinic, to ensure the most appropriate and effective treatment that is likely to benefit the patient. He qualified from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London, in 1983, after which he moved on to focus on ophthalmology as a postgraduate in Barts and Southampton, followed by training at Moorfields Eye Hospital – one of the most famous and highly-respected eye hospitals in the world. This gave him the opportunity to work alongside many of the UK’s very best ophthalmologists, learning to perform all types of eye surgery and participating in a number of of research projects and studies.
Whilst working at Moorfields Eye Hospital that he was involved in the treatment of patients with Botulinum toxin – the substance which would eventually go on to be launched commercially as ‘Botox’ and change the face of cosmetic surgery on a global basis.
At Moorfields, he became interested in oculoplastic disorders – disorders of the eyelid – that motivated an extensive period of intensive training and education in in a fellowship lasting one year at oculoplastic Surgery in Melbourne, Australia. In 1994, he returned to the UK to take up the post of at Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon at Taunton & Somerset NHS Trust, in which he continues to date.
Mr Hakin undertakes oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery and general ophthalmic surgery (such as small-incision cataract surgery), receiving referrals from across Somerset and part of Devon. He is involved in the training of junior doctors, and also undertakes regular voluntary goodwill trips to underdeveloped countries overseas to treat patients and educate and train local doctors.
