Mr Kim Hakin MB BS, DO, FRCS, FRCOphth, qualified from St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, London, in 1983. He underwent postgraduate training in Ophthalmology at Barts and Southampton, before moving to the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital where he spent six years, working for many of the top Ophthalmologists in the country. At Moorfields he, in fact, worked with Botulinum toxin in the management of eye and eyelid movement disorders, whilst it was still a reseach treatment and before it was commercially launched as "Botox". He developed a particular interest in Oculoplastic (Eyelid) disorders and their surgery, undergoing further specialist training in this field at Moorfields before taking up a year's fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery in Melbourne, Australia. After returning from Australia in 1994 he was appointed to his current post, as Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon at Taunton & Somerset NHS Trust, with practising rights at the Somerset Nuffield Hospital.
As a Consultant in Taunton, Mr Hakin divides his time between performing "conventional" ophthalmic surgery (such as small-incision cataract surgery) and oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery, providing a service for the residents of Somerset and indeed receiving referrals from outside the County, as well as having responsibilities for the training of junior doctors.
Mr Hakin has over 20 years experience working with lasers, initially in his Ophthalmic practice, where of course they have been long-established as essential sight-saving treatment in the management, for example, of diabetic eye disease. This experience in lasers, together with that of Botox and his interest and surgical expertise in conditions of the eyelid and upper face, therefore allows him to provide a comprehensive Laser Skin, Botox and Eyelid and Cataract Surgery service at the West of England Laser Centre.
