Blepharoplasty

This is the term used to describe the surgical correction of puffy or "baggy" eyelids by removal of the excess loose skin and/or fat that develops in the upper and/or lower eyelids with age or sometimes as a family trait.

With age the eyelid skin loses its elasticity resulting in the development of "excess" skin and subsequent hooding of the eyelids that produces a heavy tired appearance, interfering with make-up application and on occasions even affecting vision. Fat within the eye socket, normally behind the eye, may migrate forwards into the eyelids producing a puffy appearance. Surgical removal of this skin and fat subtly produces an improved, fresher, younger look.

The Procedure

Surgery may be performed under local or general anaesthesia. The skin and/or fat is removed either using the natural eyelid skin creases or from the inside of the eyelid, to avoid any visible scar. Surgery can be combined with laser resurfacing an/or Botox injections.

After Surgery

Some post-operative bruising and swelling is to be expected. It will vary between individuals but will usually have resolved within two weeks. The eyelids may feel "tight" and a little sore but are rarely painful. Stitches are removed at around one week.

Is It Safe?

Blepharoplasty is an extremely safe and predictable procedure. As with all surgery, however, there is always some risk but this will be fully discussed at your consultation. For further information on eyelid surgery visit the British Oculoplastic Surgical Society at www.bopss.org.
